Michael Irving Thomas July 14, 1952 – August 7, 2025 Michael Irving Thomas, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025, at the age of 73, surrounded by the people who loved him the most. Born in Newark, New Jersey, on July 14, 1952, Michael grew up in Union, New Jersey, where his love for family, tradition, and community began. Michael attended the University of Houston, where, in 1971, he met the love of his life, Cindy. Though many joked “it wouldn’t last,” their marriage became a testament to enduring love—49 years and 7 months strong. His wish was to make it to their 50th anniversary, and though he left us too soon, his spirit will be present when that day arrives. He dedicated his entire career to UPS, where he was known for his strong work ethic, sense of humor, and dedication. Outside of work, Michael found joy in sports and family—cheering for the New York Rangers, Yankees, and Mets; watching his daughter Amy play hockey at Shattuck St. Mary's and Providence College; and attending University of Texas games with his daughter Rachel. Michael and Cindy shared a passion for animals, welcoming 27 dogs and numerous other pets into their home over the years. They also shared a love for travel, taking 39 cruises together and making Aruba their “happy place” with yearly visits. He loved New York City—Broadway shows, the Carnegie Deli, and everything the city had to offer. Michael was predeceased by his loving parents, Norma and Norman Thomas, and his sister-in-law Lucinda Lewis. He is survived by his devoted wife Cindy, his cherished daughters Rachel and Amy, his siblings and siblings-in-law Marcy and Graham Cook, Suzanne and Jim Harrel, and Doug Lewis, as well as his beloved nieces and nephews Jeremy, Addison, Samantha, Nicole, and Kate. Funeral services will be held in accordance with Jewish tradition. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Swan Songs (Swan Songs Musical Last Wishes, a nonprofit that fulfills musical last wishes for those nearing the end of life – www.swansongs.org) or to a charity of your choice in Michael’s memory.
