Irene Parker

Irene Wyde Parker was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on October 4, 1931. As the youngest member of a loving blended family, she was a precocious and affectionate child who was the light of her parents' lives. Throughout her life, she embraced her family's Jewish values and traditions, her mother's resilience, and her father's charm and wit. Irene passed away at 94-years-old peacefully in Austin, Texas, on July 6, 2026, surrounded by those she loved. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard "Dick" Parker. Theirs was a true love story that spanned more than 69 years. After meeting at The University of Texas at Austin, they were married in Port Arthur and made their home there for the next fifty years before returning to Austin in retirement. Together, they were memorable members of both communities, serving as business, civic, and social contributors. In Port Arthur, Irene pursued her love of theater, performing in leading roles with the Little Theatre and delighting local schoolchildren through The Service League's puppet shows. She had a particular talent for playing the villain, and her children often teased that she wasn't acting when she delivered a dramatic cackle around the house. Irene approached life with energy, humor, and enthusiasm. She taught water aerobics at the YMCA and became an accomplished bridge player, earning the distinction of Life Master alongside her best friend and partner, June Eddingston. She opened her home and heart to family and friends, hosting gatherings that became cherished memories. A gifted cook, she was especially known for her soups and for creating spontaneous adventures for her family-candlelit Italian nights, picnics in the living room, and trips to McFaddin Beach for weenie roasts. In keeping with the Jewish traditions she cherished throughout her life, she continued her mother's practice of celebrating Shabbat each Friday, bringing family and friends together in warmth and gratitude. Irene and Dick fulfilled their dream of owning a beach house when they built a beautiful home on Crystal Beach. There, they created some of their family's most treasured memories and shared countless joyful days with loved ones. When Irene returned to Austin, she embraced a new chapter of Jewish learning at Temple Beth Shalom, where she studied for and celebrated her Bat Mitzvah. Through her studies, she formed many lifelong friendships and continued meeting almost weekly with her rabbi and fellow classmates nearly until the end of her life. She also became part of a wonderful group of women who celebrated one another's birthdays each month and shared a lasting bond of friendship. Above all, Irene will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, humor, and unwavering devotion to her family. She had a gift for making people feel welcome, creating lasting traditions, and turning ordinary moments into cherished memories. Irene is survived by her children, Scott Parker (Sharon), Bonnie Martin (Mike), and Allison Schwartz (Jack); her grandchildren, Jeffrey, Alexandra (Peter), Ty (Angie), Parker, Julianne, Philip, Sydney, and Grant; and her great-grandchildren, Sloan, Gregory, and Bobby. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Lifeworks of Austin, MD Anderson Hospital, your local food bank, or to the charity of your choice. Her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
