Ira Sydney Goodman

Ira Goodman of Austin, Texas, passed away on September 17th, 2024, at the age of 90. He was born on May 14th, 1934, to Morris and Diana (Nurenberg) Goodman in New York City. He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School, received a bachelor's degree from City College of New York and a master's degree in accounting from NYU. Ira went on to have a very successful 38 year career at IBM as a Programming Manager. He met his wife of 67 years, Lois, at a pool club in the Bronx in 1956 and they married in 1957. Ira and Lois raised their two boys (David and Gary) in Poughkeepsie, New York. Ira was the ultimate family man coaching baseball and playing tennis with his sons and wife. He was very involved in the community and the education of his sons serving multiple terms on the school board and serving as vice president of Poughkeepsie's Temple Beth El. Ira was a great cook taking over meal prep for the family when Lois went back to school and reentered the workplace. He always put on a great spread for all family holidays. Lois and Ira moved to Austin, Texas, in 1994 and he retired in 2000 after leading his IBM programming group through Y2K. In retirement Ira and Lois took many Adult Ed classes at UT and officiated junior tennis tournaments. He adored his grandchildren (Aaron, Casey, Kirby and Brett) traveling with them to Costa Rica, Mexico, Iceland and various U.S. locations. He especially loved to attend their various sporting activities. Ira was an avid newshound throughout his lifetime always keeping up to date and discussing world events with family and friends especially anything related to Israel. Ira was preceded in death by his parents Morris and Diana (Nurenberg) Goodman and sister Elaine (Goodman) Kallman. He's survived by wife Lois, sons, David (Rita) and Gary (Lisa) Goodman; and his grandchildren, Aaron, Casey, Kirby and Brett Goodman. A Graveside Service will be held at Austin Memorial Park on Friday, September 20 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Memorial Service and meal of consolation at Temple Beth Shalom at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association. https://act.alz.org/site/Donation2
