Frederick John Strieter

Frederick J. Strieter passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family in Austin, Texas on Monday, January 5, 2026. Fred was born on September 14, 1934 in Davenport, Iowa to Frederick and Selma (Godehn) Strieter. He attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, where he met Ann, his wife of 68 years. In church, raising a family, and traveling to far ends of the earth, Fred and Ann were together in every endeavor. Fred graduated from Augustana in 1956 with an A.B. degree in Chemistry. His studies then took Fred and Ann out west to the University of California, Berkeley, where he received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 1960 with thesis work in x-ray crystallography. Fred joined Texas Instruments in 1959, bringing Fred and Ann to Dallas, TX, which became their home for 65 years. During his 23 years at TI, Fred worked in research and manufacture of semiconductors and integrated circuits. Following his time at Texas Instruments, he continued his career at Honeywell for 13 years, before retiring as a General Manager of Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY in 1997. As his wife Ann says, Fred "flunked retirement" and became an adjunct professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Texas A&M University for the next 14 years. Fred held multiple patents and authored many publications in the field of Chemistry. He was a member of several academic and scientific societies, including serving as President of the Electrochemical Society, where he later became an Honorary Member. Throughout his life, Fred was a deeply devoted Christian. Together with Ann, Fred joined Messiah Lutheran Church in January 1960, where he later served in many roles, including Treasurer and President of the Congregation. Fred and Ann also hold close to their hearts Concordia University Texas, where Fred served as Chairman of the Board in the late 1960's to the mid-1970's. Fred grew up in the family business of Strieter Motor Company. He shared his love of Ford automobiles and at one time owned 3 Mustangs! He enjoyed working on his 1964 ½ Mustang Convertible and even let his two daughters drive it! He kept all of the extra car parts in his closet, under the bed, in the attic, and even in the girls' playhouse in the backyard! Another love was stamp collecting! Often, one could walk into any of the bathrooms in the Strieter household and find the upper-right corners of envelopes floating in the sink, with a handy pair of tweezers nearby to remove the stamps. Fred was also an avid collector of sheep figurines, with a collection of more than 600! Fred was preceded in death by his brother, David, and infant brother, Mark. He is survived by his wife Ann and their two daughters, Susie Strieter and Nancy (Dean) Schaffer, as well as two granddaughters, Samantha (Colin) Brock and Shannon Schaffer, all of whom he loved dearly. He is also survived by his sister Anne Mangelsdorf, sister-in-law Cathie Strieter, brother-in-law Ralph Peterson, 12 nieces and nephews, and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews, all with whom he enjoyed discussions on a wide range of topics, always as an expert! A Memorial Service celebrating Fred's life will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church, Plano, Texas, on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Frederick J. and Ann E. Strieter Scholarship Endowment at Concordia University Texas or to Messiah Lutheran Church in Plano, Texas.
