Betty Jenny Marz

Betty Marz, age 97, of Austin, TX, formerly of St. Paul, MN passed away September 18, 2022. There will be a graveside service Friday, September 23rd, at 11:00 am (Central Time), at Mt. Zion Cemetery, in St. Paul. A memorial gathering will be held in Austin in October. She was preceded in death by her son, Ben, her husband, Herbert, and her siblings, Joe, Louis, George, Sol, Max, and Ida. She is survived by her son, Charles, his life partner, Deirdre Phillips, his daughter Jennifer Dozor and her husband, Sam, and their son, Max, and by his son, Alex, and his wife Emily. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Janet Marz (Ben, of blessed memory), and their three daughters, Elizabeth (Andrew Meyer and great-granddaughter Isabel Poppy), Andrea (Patrice Pike), and Michelle (Daniel Okonek). Betty was born On October 5, 1924, in Mason City, Iowa to Benjamin and Miriam Benowitz. She moved to St Paul to attend the University of Minnesota, where she was Homecoming Queen and an active member of SDT sorority. She married Herbert Charles Marz, and spent most of her adult life in St Paul, where she enjoyed her family and friends. She was a long-time member of Mount Zion Temple in St. Paul. In 2001 Betty moved to Austin, TX and quickly acclimated to her move. She volunteered at Seton Medical Center in Austin and often referred to herself as the CEO of the Information Desk. She also loved to say that she volunteered as a bartender for new member welcome receptions and monthly happy hours at Westminster where she lived beginning in 2015. Betty had many friends and family in the Twin Cities and in Austin who loved her very much. Betty was always immaculately dressed, perfectly coiffed. She was an inspiration, whether waking up early to swim, gathering for her weekly mahjong or bridge games, enthusiastically playing tennis when younger, eagerly watching professional tennis on tv as often as possible, or making her signature chocolate candy for the next big event and for friends and family. She was always organized, doing it all with a wink, a smile, and a twinkle in her eye. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Betty’s memory to one of the following charitable organizations: Westminster Scholarship Fund at Westminster in Austin, TX; the Marilyn Stahl SDT Endowment Fund at Shalom Austin, or Hospice Austin.
